Once in a while you have a conversation with someone that makes you pause and think.
A few days ago I received a call from a recruiter. He asked me if new vCheese. I figured I must be hungry and I imagined hearing food on the other line.I asked him to repeat and sure enough he said he is looking for an expert in vCheese! I had to admit that my skill set did not include such appetizing products. Out of curiosity I asked him who made such a delicious sounding product. He responded VMware! The tone of his response made it sound like it was the most obvious thing in the world and me missing such an obvious product placed me in the company of the not so intelligent group!
I replied, “I was not aware that VMware have moved into the dairy business (great diversification move though!) and I asked if he could spell it.
The recruiter reluctantly obliged my request ..
V C H S
vCHS (vCloud Hybrid Service) is the new VMware product he was referring to!
This was followed by silence on my part as I contemplated my response.”Sorry I am not familiar with this amazing product” I said.
He responded, do you know anyone who might be? He added that I could qualify for a referral fee if whomever I recommend got that job as vCheese Architect!
Again silence on my part.
“Yes, I do know the perfect person who is an expert in vCheese!” Then I gave him the main phone number and the name of a guy who works in the Cheese section in a grocery store close by.
The recruiter was thankful as he hang up.
Now I understand, not all recruiters are technical, but you are expected to at least be able to pronounce (at least close enough) any product you are asking candidates about. Otherwise you might come across as a cheesy individual and we do not want that .. do we?
Any more cheese anyone?
Thank you for reading a personal rant.
